Conference Narrative Ethics

19–20 November 2010,
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, University of Oslo, Norway

Conference Program

Introduction:

Responding to what has been called the “ethical turn” in narrative theory, this conference explored some of the varied ways in which narrative fiction and non-fiction are possessed of both an ethical and an (often overlapping) aesthetic dimension. Two premises for the conference were accordingly: first, that neither narratives nor criticism are inconsequential “free play” and, second, that the analysis of narrative ethics needs to be linked to a sensitivity to aesthetic (narrative) form. Thus the conference was particularly interested in papers that discussed the interplay and cumulative effects of the two dimensions not just on a theoretical level, but also through the analysis of specific narratives.
